X removes support for NFT profile pictures.

X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has quietly removed the feature that allowed paid subscribers to set NFTs as their profile pictures. Under Twitter’s previous management, this feature was introduced in January 2022, allowing Twitter Blue subscribers to display NFTs minted on Ethereum as hexagonal profile pictures. However, X has now removed all descriptions of the NFT profile picture feature from its X Premium support page.

Previously, the feature allowed users to click on the profile picture to access information about the NFT, such as the collection it belonged to, the contract address, TokenID, and the minting app. Users who had already set an NFT as their profile picture still have hexagonal avatars, although it is unclear if X will eventually remove those.

Removing the NFT profile picture feature is not surprising, as other social networks have also scaled back their experiments with NFTs. Instagram and Facebook began showcasing and posting NFTs in 2022, but Meta (formerly Facebook) discontinued NFT support in March 2023.

While the value of some high-priced NFT tokens, like the Bored Ape Yacht Club, has experienced a decline from its peak, the NFT market has shown signs of recovery in recent months. Trade volumes have surpassed $1.6 billion, according to NFT aggregator CryptoSlam.

While removing this feature, X has focused on its grand vision for the future. In a recent announcement, the company outlined plans for 2024, including the launch of peer-to-peer payments and developing more AI-powered tools.

Although removing the NFT profile picture feature may disappoint some X subscribers, it aligns with a broader trend in the industry. NFT experiments by social media platforms have lost momentum, indicating that the initial excitement surrounding NFTs has waned. It remains to be seen if X will introduce any new features or initiatives related to NFTs in the future or if the platform will continue to move in a different direction.
