Epic Games Store Now Allows Blockchain Games, and ‘Gods Unchained’ Is Back.

The Epic Games Store has revised its content policies, enabling the return of the NFT card game Gods Unchained and other blockchain games to its platform. Epic Games, the publisher behind the popular game Fortnite, made this announcement on Tuesday.

Previously, Gods Unchained and Striker Manager 3 were removed from the Epic Games Store due to receiving an “Adults Only” rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). However, following the policy change, games with an AO rating are now allowed on the platform as long as the rating is solely due to blockchain or NFT technology usage.

The ESRB assigns an AO rating to games deemed suitable only for individuals over 18. Gods Unchained received an AO rating due to its play-to-earn elements, which allow players to receive NFTs or crypto tokens with real-world value. The ESRB clarified that their age and content rating system considers whether products offer rewards with real money or value, including cryptocurrency.

Traditionally, AO ratings are associated with games featuring intense violence, explicit nudity, or sexual themes. Major gaming platforms such as Xbox and PlayStation currently prohibit the distribution of AO-rated games.

Epic Games’ decision to allow blockchain games with an AO rating is a significant development breakthrough. While rival platform Steam does accept blockchain games, it previously did not accept AO-rated titles. Epic Games aims to support innovative blockchain technology by making this exception while upholding its policies against gambling, pornography, and hateful content.

It is likely that blockchain games offering “real-world value” will continue to receive AO ratings. However, this will allow them to be listed on the Epic Games Store.

The return of Gods Unchained and other blockchain games to the Epic Games Store is a positive development for the blockchain gaming community. It opens up opportunities for developers to reach a wider audience and further explore the potential of NFTs and cryptocurrencies within gaming experiences.

Epic Games’ decision to revise its content policies is a significant step towards embracing blockchain technology in the gaming industry. Including AO-rated blockchain games on the Epic Games Store signifies a recognition of this emerging genre’s unique qualities and potential.
