Decentralized Social Network ‘Bluesky’ Receives 30,000 Signups For Beta Testing
Twitter backed decentralized social media platform Bluesky has received 30,000 signups on its beta testing waitlist. Bluesky aims to be an open-source and interoperable platform that will be free from centralized control and censorship.

Bluesky, a decentralized social network platform backed by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, opened its waitlist for beta testing on Tuesday. Since then the platform has received 30,000 signups. The company has announced that it will be rolling out beta testing invites in phases due to “overwhelming interest”.

Bluesky’s mission is to build a social media platform that will give users control over their own data and free them from centralized control. The network built on the decentralized AT (Authenticated Transfer) Protocol, makes it an open-source and interoperable platform that allows users to interact with different applications on the same ecosystem, while being able to self-host their accounts.
Bluesky is building a social protocol. We released “ADX” (the X stood for Experiment) in May. Now that the design is starting to solidify, we’re renaming it to the “Authenticated Transport Protocol” — the “AT Protocol.” https://t.co/Q0XUF8OhVD

The network was initiated by Dorsey in 2019, when he assigned an independent team of developers to come up with an “open and decentralized” social media network. Last year, Twitter appointed Zcash engineer Jay Graber as the lead of Bluesky, making it a separate entity to the social media giant.
Twitter is funding a small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media. The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard. 🧵
